MEET MICHELLE

My name is Michelle Hess and I have had the privilege to serve as the Council representative of District 3 since 2012.  Buckeye has captured my heart!  We moved here because of a job, but we stay because of the community.  I love the small town charm of this growing city.  I enjoy bringing my children up in a community where I feel safe and part of something bigger than ourselves.  I enjoy our annual traditions such as the Glow on Monroe, rodeo’s, and 4th of July firework show.  I see what Buckeye can be one day and desire to protect those things that give it that special charm.

I have lived in Arizona for 32 years and in Buckeye for nearly ten years. My husband McKenzie is a firefighter and we just celebrated our 17th year of marriage! McKenzie is the president of the United Buckeye Firefighters Charity, and an All Faith Foodbank Board member.  We have three amazing children that love Buckeye and all it has to offer. We enjoy serving at our local church, different community events,  as well as mission opportunities such as Mexico (1Mission), El Salvador, and Haiti.

I am a summa cum laude graduate of Grand Canyon University with a liberal arts degree in theology and received my master’s in ministry from Johnson University May of 2015. When I was elected to the council, I knew that I needed to continue to educate myself and network to ensure the sucess of Buckeye.  In 2013 I was selected as a fellow of the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy, graduating from Class 5. This intensive program is designed to expand the number of future state-level leaders with the skills, knowledge and commitment to address Arizona’s long-term issues. I am also an alumnus of Leadership West class XX. In 2014, I was selected from leaders nationally and internationally to participate in the Harvard University Senior Executives in State and Local Government. All of these programs have helped equip me to be a better leader and give me tools to help lead Buckeye into the future.

I began my career in the banking industry and that lead to Human Resources. I then spent the next ten years in ministry, assisting in the launch of two new church start-ups, as well as the re-branding and re-launch of another.  I have held multiple positions within the church and now serve as a mentor and consultant to the church industry.

I serve as the City Council representative on the:

  • Public Safety Retirement Board - Police

  • Community Services Advisory Board

  • Buckeye Youth Council

  • Maricopa Association of Government (MAG) Human Services Coordinating Committee, Vice Chair

  • Southwest Lending Closet

  • Community Development Advisory Commission (CDAC), Alternate member.

  • National League of Cities - Human Development Policy and Advocacy Committee.

To succeed as a community, people must feel safe, desire to raise their children here, and have good jobs.  Because those things are vital to our success, through collaborative partnerships I led the charge for Buckeye to become a “Read On City” as a part of a State led literacy program. I also serve as the liaison for the AzSciTech events for Buckeye and was integral in launching the Buckeye Youth Council in 2014.
